Lesson 4
Hufflepuff
Welcome to the wonderful house of Hufflepuff. You can find The Sett (the Hufflepuff house forum) here. The Sett is a fun place to be for every HOLer, whether or not they’re a Badger.
Registration
Registration is a three-part process:
1. You register, following the instructions on the registration page (particularly the parts in red).
2. Verify your email address, which will be explained in the registration email you’ll receive.
3. A Hufflepuff administrator (usually Professor Rorey Padfoot) will approve your account.
Be especially careful while registering. If you miss any of these steps, your account won’t be approved and you’ll miss out on the fun that is the Sett.

The Forum: A Tour
We will start with the areas that are open to only Hufflepuffs, and then move along to those only accessible by all houses.
House Announcements
Hear Ye, Hear Ye - a place where Prefects, Professors and our lovely Head of Houses make Hufflepuff announcements. All important announcements regarding both Hufflepuff and HOL will be posted here. If there is something new here, you should read it.
The Badger Soapbox - a place where all Badgers are free to post announcements.
Huffle Orientation – All new Badgers are welcome here. Classes will be posted and will help you familiarise yourself with all things HOL. Have fun!

The Broom Cupboard – All things Quidditch related, (including mischief on broomsticks, apparently, there is a topic currently in there called First Streaker) can be found here.

We have room redecorating ... celebrations of all kinds .. TRIVIA ... different things at different times. Here you can also find information on awards. The current Diamon count is here as well.
The Giant Birthday Card - This is where we wish people happy birthday, according to their listed birthdays in the Sett profiles.

The Huffle Garden (Partially Open to All Houses)
The Department of Huffle Games and Sports (aka Games Tent) was created by Professor Dom Gaidin September 12, 2004
Welcome to the Games Tent, Find the Tent Password Here. It has continued and been active every month since then. Dom created it, acquired a student helper (Tarma Black) and then Tarma inherited it and has kept it going ever since.
Graphics Club - is visible to Badgers only. It resides in The Huffle Garden, and that is where we get out the ink bottles and throw them at one another ... NO. We create pictures and colour pages and MAKE things and have fun.

Diamonds
We have our own internal points, called diamonds. To be more accurate with what J.K. Rowling envisions the gems that fill the Hufflepuff Hourglass, we have switched to Diamonds as our in-house currency. Our Diamonds are yellow jewels, so they’re perfect for us. Hufflepuff diamonds can be earned by any HOLer through a variety of activities and are tallied every month. There is a yearly diamond count that is reset every July and continues until the following June.
Hufflepuff Staff
Hufflepuff has a fair number of Prefects and Professors, and so every Badger has his or her own prefect. You can turn to them for questions you have about different things around the Sett, if you need help or something. Here’s the list!
Prefects
Current Active Professor List
Ghosts and Beings:
In addition to professors and students from all over HOL, there are also several, ahem, non-human things roaming about the Sett. Not to worry, though, as they’re all mostly harmless.
Naturally, The Fat Friar floats in and out at his leisure, making sure the Badgers are keeping themselves out of trouble.
Being so close to the kitchens, Wilbur the House-Elf is around a lot, and he’s often doing odd chores and things around the place.
If a Badger is in need of a different outlook, they can always stop by Helga Hufflepuff’s Portrait; she’s always happy to spend some time with her magical kin.
Last, and certainly not beast… er, least... is Parker, a poltergeist who delights in creating havoc around the Sett. He doesn’t strike often, but when he does, it often ends in something blowing up or something.

The Wizarding Times
Besides participating in various forum activities, there are other ways to get involved in Hufflepuff. We have a house magazine called the Wizarding Times (which you can find here), which comes out regularly during the school year. The paper is managed by a group of staff members who oversee it and make sure we have all sorts of articles and interviews. Anyone, Badger or not, can contribute. Just look at the contact page on the magazine site for information. The current editor-in-chief is Prof. Rorey Padfoot.
If you have any ideas or questions about the Wizarding Times, please contact Prof. Rorey Padfoot.
If you have any ideas or questions about the Wizarding Times, please contact Prof. Rorey Padfoot.
Hufflepuff Clubs
Hufflepuff has activities for students to participate and join. Below is a list of what you can find as a Hufflepuff.
The Spiffies
The Hufflepuff Quidditch Team (HQT) is group of Badgers who love to play Quidditch – and they call themselves Spiffies (because that's what they are). They are led by Marcie Hobber (Captain) and Professor Tarma Amelia Black (Co-Captain), who are the persons to go to with all your Quidditch questions. If you’re interested in finding out about Badgers and Quidditch, stop by the Broom Cupboard at the Sett for the latest information.
IRC
Like other houses, we also have the IRC channel #hufflepuff on the Blitzed network. Any HOLer is welcome to come hang out and visit, though we’re often quiet. Don’t let that fool you into thinking we’re boring, though. We just talk when we have something to say. And, you know what they say: if you can sit in silence with a person for half an hour and still be entirely comfortable, you can be friends.
The Precious
Years ago, while she was still a student, Felicia Hartwick got a hold of the house credit card (affectionately known as the Precious), and she hasn’t loosened her grip yet. Don’t be surprised if one day you’re walking down the hall and suddenly find yourself dragged down to Hogsmeade for the latest Kenneth Troll or Calvin Kappa sale. Felicia just senses when these things are going to happen, and she needs all the help she can get with her bags. It’s not a glamorous job, but if you play your cards right, Felicia might even let you look in her dimensionally transcendental closet. However, don’t ask to borrow any of her shoes. Just… trust me on this.
The Pokey Stick
Another attribute our house has is The Pokey Stick. Rorey Padfoot is the current owner and operator of this stick, so beware when she is around. Due to badgers being nocturnal at times they are lazy during the days, so if Rorey sees you sleeping when there are points to be earned, she will poke you with The Pokey Stick to get you up and moving. So look busy when she’s around.
Gryffindor
Finally, we have the Gryffindor Common Room. Located in one of the towers of the castle, things are pretty cozy here. HOL Gryffindors are known to be insane, laid back, and occasionally go on frequent hibernation, but we're loved for our crazy antics and our humor.
Don't worry though, I'll take you on a tour. I've learned all the nooks and crannies over the past three years, so I promise you won't get lost!

The Gryffindor Common Room
The Gryffindor Common Room is the home of all things Gryffindor. This is where the most interaction within the house takes place. Gryffindor welcomes all houses to register for its forum, though only Gryffindors will get the full access to the forum and all its' secret nooks and crannies. We do, however, have an area solely dedicated to where guests from other houses and Gryffindors can talk, chat, and role play with each other. Here is an in depth breakdown of the GCR and it’s functions.
Registration
We require anyone who wants to post or to read the forum to register an account with us. We have strict registration guidelines, so we ask all of those wanting access to our board to read our Registration Guidelines before registering first.
This guideline hosts very detailed information on how to register for our common room CORRECTLY, so that your registration is not deleted multiple times. This area of the forum is viewable without having to register first. Please note that after registering it will take between three to seven days for your registration to be accepted. Validating registrations are done solely by Prof. Missa Matz.
If you have any questions about how to correctly register, please contact a Gryffindor prefect first. If you receive no response from the prefect.
It is important to note that after three failed registration attempts there is the possibility that your IP address may be banned from the forum. The rules are explained clearly in the post linked above. You will be able to tell if your registration is accepted or not by going to the Summer/Fall 2015 Approved/Unapproved Registration topic. If you were not approved, the reasons will be clearly stated as to why. Correct the errors that were listed and then please sign up again correctly.

Current Activities/Challenges
This is the place on the forum where lions can find current Gryffindor activities being hosted. Over the year, Gryffindor will host several different activities. In the past, we've had all kinds of activities: Apples to Apples, Gryffindor's Got Talent, Save Valentine's Day, Winter Wonderlion... the list goes on and on, and these activities were found here in this section. This is also the section of the forum where Gryfftoberfest is hosted during October (please see below for more info!).
Due to the completion of old activities and the commencement of new activities, this section is ever-changing. Make sure to keep up to date with Gryffindor news so that you'll know when there's a fun activity to participate in!

Queen Maeve's Quarters (Partially Open to All Houses)
Welcome to the area for dens and clubs! This area hosts our dens and clubs. These are some of the most fun places to be on the forums! While all of these areas are open to Gryffindor students, other houses can also view The Library and The Gryfftastic Graphics Club.
The Pawprint - Home to our house newspaper, this is where the Paw Print staff works to put out new issues. This forum is password protected and can only be accessed by Paw Print staff members. For more information on how to join, please see the section on the Paw Print below!
Cubs with Clubs - This is the home of the Gryffindor Quidditch team! Here, you can learn about how to become a Quidditch player (and we are in desperate need of Quidditch players at the moment, so if you're interested, please check it out!), learn about our current Quidditch players, and even become one! The subforums are:
The Spice Jar - I'm going to try to keep this brief because this is my most favorite section of the entire forum and I could chat forever about it. This is the Spice Squad's home! As current captain, I want to stress that Spice Jar is welcome to ALL Gryffindors, whether you're interested in being a Spice or not. Here, you will find threads that all Gryffindors can chat in about their house, Gryffindor Quidditch team, and house points! There are two subforums within Spice Jar currently:
Lion Cub Pawtner Project - This a great place for a Gryffindor first year to visit! Here, you can sign up to get your own Pawtner. A Pawtner is an older student who becomes your first friend on Gryffindor. Not only is he or she there to become your friend, but he or she also shows you the different sections of our forum, answers any of your questions, and helps you find out about Gryffindor things you're interested in! Waffling's Ward (Open to all Houses)
This is the area that is open to all houses. Posts in this area usually do not count against your post points, but rules are less strictly enforced in some of these areas than the rest of the forum. This is a great place to invite your non-Gryffindor friends for good fun! There are currently five subforums found here:
Godric's Gate - This is our new discussion thread for the Gryffindor Common Room, now open to all who visit. Here, you can find many topics of many different varieties: music, movies, Harry Potter, theater, video games, sports, and many other topics you could think of. This is the perfect place to chat with your Gryffindor and non-Gryffindor friends!
Study Room - This is our HOL student discussion area, and hosts one subforum. The main forum of this section is used to discuss what classes you're taking this term on HOL, and what are your most favorite HOL classes you've ever taken. You can also find a full list of current HOL classes and what Gryffindors are taking them, and who's leading Gryffindor in the Top House Point Earners List. Like I mentioned above, there is one subforum:
HELF - One of Gryffindor Common Room's most active subforums, HELF is Gryffindor's game section. Here, "spamming" rules do not apply! There are bunches of silly games for everyone to play, whether you're a Gryffindor or from another house. The most popular games at the moment include 1-10,000, The ABC Game, and Where Will You Be If. Make sure to read the first post of each game before you participate!
If you have a new idea for a game in HELF, please contact a prefect or junior prefect before beginning it.
Ye Olden Poste - This is the notice board! Here, you can wish your friends happy birthday, tell your friends you'll be gone on vacation for a week, or if you have to go away from HOL for any amount of time. This is the place to go to do all these things!
The Trophy Case - When awards and badges are given out to the members of Gryffindor (and the occasional other-house member), they will be announced here! You can also congratulate winners while visiting.
And there we have it... a complete tour of the Gryffindor Common Room. I apologize the tour took so long; I have a habit of being long-winded, after all!

Gryffindor Staff
Prefect
Prefects are chosen as needed. They first begin as a Junior Prefect (JP), and then, based on their contribution during that time frame, are either promoted, kept as JP, or asked to step down. We accept applications at the beginning of every term for JPs. However, we do not accept bribes. We basically watch the Gryffindor forum for those with a helping hand, who participate within their dens, who participate within HOL, and basically those who work hard and don’t beg for attention. Prefects are completely chosen by the HoH and DHoH from current JPs, at the HoH and DHoH's discretion.
The Prefect in Charge is chosen directly by the HoH and DHoH. The PiC's job is to oversee the prefects and junior prefects, helping them when needed, and to make sure that everyone is doing their jobs to ensure everything is running smoothly.
Professors
House Creatures/Guardians
- Kim Alting (Head Prefect/PiC)
- Sky Alton

Professors
- Professor Dario Brighton (DHoH)
- Professor Hailey Potter
- Professor Jenny Lupin (DHoH)
- Professor Missa Matz (HoH)
- Prof. Nina Messersmith
House Creatures/Guardians
- Humfrey B. – Our friendly, and incredibly obnoxious house poltergeist. Watch for him to randomly insult people and constantly break things.
- The Gryffindor Fat Lady – Of course, our lovely portrait. She does not post often, but when she does, do not take what she says lightly.
- Sir Nick – Our resident ghost. He enjoys sighing about his woes and never getting a date for Valentine's day.
Awards
Awards are led by Hailey Potter. The Lions' Pride Committee nominating and voting. Winners are presented to the HOH and DHOHs to be approved before being announced to all of HOL.
Awards are given to those lions who are active, vocal, and involved in things on HOL and Gryffindor.
Awards are given to those lions who are active, vocal, and involved in things on HOL and Gryffindor.
- Exploding Snap Award - Given to the most humorous student. This is based off of forum posts that everyone can read. Unfortunately not everyone has IRC or has access to all the dens. This award can be given out once every 2 months, but the same person cannot win it consecutively. And of course, if no one was humorous enough to meet our needs, then it is not given out.
- Golden Snitch Award - Given to a Gryffindor who is vocal, active, encouraging and enthusiastic in the forums, irc, and in their HOL classes. Award for 2nd years and up. Awarded once every 2 months. Cannot be awarded to the same person twice in a row.
- Lively Lionet - Given to a Gryffindor who is vocal, active, encouraging and enthusiastic in the forums, irc, and/or in their HOL classes. Award for 1st years only. Awarded once every 2 months. Cannot be awarded to the same person twice in a row.
- Nimbus 2000 Award - Given to the most helpful student. This award is given to the most helpful Gryffindor students, so long as they obey the Chain of Command. It is for students who are helpful in responding to questions with clearly thought out ideas, but not for students who post in areas where they should not be. This can be based off of Common Room posts, as well as IRC activity. This award may be given out every 2 months, and there can be no consecutive recipients.
- Phoenix Award - Given to the most innovative student. This is for students who generate ideas to help the house and send them correctly through the Gryffindor Chain of Command. This may also be awarded to staff, however not as often as staff is expected to be innovative. This award may be given monthly, but cannot be won by the same person twice in a row, and no more than 2 times a year.
- Consistent Cub Award - Given to a student who may not be top in points, but actively participates in classes, HOL projects, and house papers to consistently earn monthly points. This award is not based solely on class points, but an a myriad of other ways to earn points as well. Award for 2nd years and up. This award may be given out monthly, but there can be no consecutive months of winning, and you may not be awarded this award more than 3 times a year.
- Studious Simba - Given to a first year student who shows great promise with their point hoarding skills. Recipients do not have to be top in points, but they should be active in their classes, projects, contests and/or house papers. Award for 1st years only. This award may be given out monthly, but there can be no consecutive months of winning, and you may not be awarded this award more than 3 times a year.
- Curious Kitten Award - Given to the best 1st Year student; Awarded at the end of each term. This award covers points, posting in the Common Room and possible IRC activity. Cannot be awarded to the same person twice.
- Platinum Quill Award - Given to the most studious student. This is based on a points total at the end of each term. The Gryffindor who has earned the most points each term can win this award.
- Lionheart Award - Given to someone from another House who is a good friend to Gryffindor...based on specific deeds. Specific deeds can vary from helping to fix something in Gryffindor, to even just posting in the RPG forum. This award *can* be given every 2 months, however it may not be awarded to the same person within a year. If there is no one who fits the defined criteria, then the award will not be given.
- Pride of the Pride Award - This is THE award for Gryffindor. It is the hardest to earn since the criteria for winning it is very high. Must be active in HOL and Gryffindor, be part of many clubs, usually only given if an extremely difficult task was done or for constant hard work keeping the house together. This award is never given more than once a year, and sometimes if nothing was deemed worthy enough, it can be not given for many years. You may not win this award 2 years in a row.
The Paw Print
The Pawprint is Gryffindor’s Newspaper that is brought to you by Gryffindor students and staff. It is run by Prof. Hailey Potter, and there is an application process in order to join the writing staff. Non-Gryffindors may also be on the Pawprint staff. Writing for the Pawprint does earn you house points, depending on the number of articles you write per issue. You can see the current issue here.
Gryfftoberfest
Gryfftoberfest is held in October of every year. It is the month where we Gryffindor’s celebrate our Gryffindorness with contests held for the whole of the house, and is pretty much an all-around party month in Gryffindor. Each year right before the party starts, there is a motto contest. After the winning motto is chosen, there is a signature and avatar contest. Then, many different activities are hosted to participate in. Reoccurring activities include Pin the Head on Sir Nick, Make a New Dress for the Fat Lady, and Trick or Treat with Humfrey B. So get ready for a month full of butterbeer and lots and lots of fun!
Gryffindor Clubs
Gryffindor has many clubs and activities that are open to our students. Almost all of these require an application process, though not all of them do. Below is a list of what we have to offer.
Gryffindor Quidditch Team
The GQT is run by Gryffindor Quidditch star Prof. Jenny Lupin. You make the Quidditch team by a series of tryouts. When tryouts are open and available, a post indicating the rules of participation for the team, as well as how to tryout is posted in the common room. GQT’s area of the board is called Cubs with Clubs. Anyone may post in this forum area as long as it is Quidditch related, however only team members may post in the team areas.
Spice Squad
The Spice Squad is run by Prof. Hailey Potter, and is our Gryffindor Cheerleading Squad. This group of people do far more than just cheer at Quidditch games. They also help promote cheer and activity within the common room, including brainstorming ideas for new activities, motivating Gryffindor students to score more points, and running the occasional Gryffindor activity. Joining this club is held through a simple one-time application process, which can be sent to Hailey via PM at any time throughout the year. Yes, you read that right! You can apply any time throughout the year. I love my Spices and always welcome new ones.
Also, please note that you can be a member of Spice Squad and still play Quidditch. Likewise, you can also be a Gryffindor Quidditch team member and join the Spice Squad. You can indeed join both, so don't feel like you have to choose! Do both and make two sets of awesome friends! If you have any ideas to help make Gryffindor an even better place, joining the Spice Squad is definitely a perfect fit for you!
