Lesson 3
Ravenclaw
Welcome to the Roost! What is the Roost, you might ask? Well, it’s the Ravenclaw Common Room, of course, located here. If you are a Ravenclaw and haven’t registered yet, I suggest doing so immediately. You’ll be missing a lot of stuff otherwise! If you’re not a Ravenclaw, there’s no rule against registering, either! While you won’t be able to participate in most of the Ravenclaw-oriented activities, you can still talk and have fun with your Ravenclaw friends in the section of the forum opened to all houses.
Registration
Your first stop in the forum should be at the top: the section that is called Registration Information. You must read the topics in there before registering. Once you read each topic, register for the Roost following the instructions provided. You'll be approved by an admin, and then you can join us for the tour!
The Forum: A Tour
Now that you're all registered, welcome to the Roost! The beginning of our tour is just for Ravenclaws, but towards the end you'll find sections open to all houses.
The Roost
This section includes all announcements, information, newbie help, general discussions, and activities for all Ravenclaws. Come here for up-to-date Ravenclaw information and fun!

Ravenclaw Blog - This forum holds separate threads for each year's set of monthly newsletters.
Ravenclaw Orientation - This forum offers information specifically provided for newbies. If you’re new, it is recommended that you stop here! Ravenclaw Orientation now also includes Adopt an Eaglet. Have you read everything and are still confused? Want an older Eagle to show your way around more effectively? Sign yourself up to be adopted here! Or if you’re an older Eagle who’d love to adopt some newbies, you should sign up here too.
Birthdays - We love to celebrate your special day. Leave your birthday on the list so we could wish you a happy birthday here, or if it’s someone else’s birthday today, don’t forget to put up a topic to wish them a wonderful day.
E=MC Hammer - This new forum deals with all things related to Pop Culture.
Noticeboard - About to be away for a while? Needing to tell your friends something important like how you’ve lost your flesh-eating slug? Put up an announcement in the Noticeboard so everyone knows.
Ravenclaw Activities - This is for our monthly games such as board games (trivial pursuit, clue, or bingo) and holiday related things such as Secret Santa.

On the Branches
Welcome to the nests! Here in Ravenclaw, we sort everyone into nests depending on the first letter of your HOL name.
The Blue Nest is the home for students with names starting with the letter A to J
The Bronze Nest for letters starting with K to Z
Each nest has their own Prefects, and they’re YOUR Prefects. So if your name places you in the Blue Nest, for example, then the first people you should ask for help are the Blue Nest Prefects, which currently happens to be Ariella McManus. Each nest Prefects’ names are listed as Moderators of that nest forum. Your nest is your home in the Roost, so you’re encouraged to interact with your nest members and have fun. You’re also welcome to visit other nests, of course!

Flocks
This is the section dedicated to secrets of Prefects...
Nacho Cheeze - This is the RQT (Ravenclaw Quidditch Team) forum. It is called Nacho Cheeze after Matt Whisp and Leah Samson (AKA Faye). Even though these two Ravenclaws have since retired from HOL, the forum was named because of them. Matt Whisp had a serious love for the Spanish (language, not the people. Not that he doesn’t like the people!). So when Xanthos (the coach at the time) was helping set up the forum, the Quidditch team was obsessed with Mexican food. Thus, it was named Nacho Cheeze. Z over S, because the letter Z is obviously cooler.
The Book Nook - Ravenclaws love books, right? Or so they say, anyway. In this forum you can discuss anything and everything about books! This is not necessarily a book club, as HOL has a book club.

Alte Sententiam
The Alte Sententiam is Ravenclaw’s official House Newspaper. A current issue can be seen here. Here you can enjoy the various articles the newspaper offers, and maybe when you feel compelled to, you can submit some articles yourself and contribute as well! All contributions will get you House Points. The points breakdown is as follows:
10 points for each article submission (20 points maximum)
10 points for each graphic submission (20 points maximum)
So that means in one issue you can earn up to 40 points in total. The Alte’s current Editor-in-Chief is Prof. Cassandra Lobiesk. Prof. Silmarien Szilagyi, Polaris Black, and Ashley Margaret are all Editors. That thread also explains to you how to be a Staff Writer and Guest Writer. Editor and Staff Writer positions can only be filled by Ravenclaw students, but Guest Writers can be from any house.
Before you submit an article, you should always ask for our lovely Editor-in-Chief’s approval on your article idea first. This could be done by e-mailing [email protected] (that’s also where you should be sending in your submissions) or by posting in the Article Ideas thread in the Alte forum. Keep the listed deadlines in mind also so as not to make the Editors chase you with a stick!
While Alte is mainly a scientific journal, we receive the most random kinds of article all the time. So don’t afraid to think outside the box. We look forward to seeing your submissions in Alte!

Ravenclaw Events
There are three major events in Ravenclaw that return each and every year: Ravenclaw Pride Month, Bronze and Blue Olympic and the Ravenclaw Summer Camp. Naturally other events may take place and often do, but those are not annually returning events and so they are not included here. These will be found in "The Roost" area of the forum when taking place.
Ravenclaw Pride Month (RPM)
Eagles in SpaceLike the other three houses, Ravenclaw has its own month where we celebrate our house and our good fortune of having been chosen by the sorting hat to belong in this house. This month is called the Ravenclaw Pride Month and is an annually returning celebration, taking place in March. The object of the event is to celebrate Ravenclaw, our house spirit, and most importantly to have fun! The month is filled with fun activities to participate in all connecting in some way to the theme of the pride month that year. The theme for 2009 was Fairy Tales and among the events were Change the End of the Fairy Tale, Kiss Ulol the Toad, and Win the Heart of the Prince. 2013's theme was Eagles in Space. The events are individual and to participate in one event does not mean that you must participate in all. The Pride Month is also the time of year when the Eagles are awarded. The Eagle awards are likened to the Oscars where a category could for instance be Most Likely to Poke Someone with a Wand, Most Likely to Have a Fan Club, Best Alte submission or Best Dramatic Performance in an RPG. (Information and projects from the last RPM can be found on the Ravenclaw Library.)
Bronze and Blue Olympics (BBO)
The Bronze and Blue Olympics are like the real Olympics in the sense that it consists of various challenges that the contestants participate in and of course try to do better than those they compete against. The tasks are done in teams of 3-4 people who work together and there is usually not an overall theme as there is with the Pride Month. The tasks can be just about anything from coming up with an idea for a roller coaster in the Harry Potter theme park to participating in a debate or finding your way through an online scavenger hunt (all examples from previous BBO contests). Because it is a team contest, it is more important that the participants commit to the entire contest or at least try to find a way to inform their team mates if they cannot for some reason be around for some part of the contest. The 2012 BBO's theme was Zombies.
Summer Camp
During summer there are no classes at HOL, so to keep everyone from getting bored there is a Summer Camp set up. In a way, the summer camp is a mix between RPM and BBO. The summer camp is done in groups like the Olympics, but has a theme like the Pride Month. The theme of the summer of 2013 was Ravenwood, where campers worked on producing a summer movie blockbuster.
Ravenclaw Clubs
Ravenclaw has several clubs for students to participate in. What are you waiting for? Find out more and join one today!
Debate Club
The Debate club is a club for perfecting your arguing skills! The club can be found here and is open to all members of HOL. Each month the heads will post a new topic roughly once a month. The topics will not all be Harry Potter related. You do not have to be a “member” of the club to participate in the debate, but you do need to follow the rules! Any questions can be directed to the club's leaders: Joey Stark and Leonie Hauri.
Ravenclaw Quidditch Team
The Ravenclaw Quidditch Team is currently ran by Arielle Lemoyne, Ashley Margaretand Matilde Rayne. After a few consecutive wins, Ravenclaw Quidditch is still strong. The team continues to worship The Doctor, fight over certain Japanese boys, sing cheesy song, and of course, bot like maniacs. Tryouts are currently open and will remain so all year long. Anyone wanting to join the team is welcome to join the team room to bot or just get to know the team members better.
The Ravenclaw Quidditch team is apparently plotting on world domination by sheer numbers. We look forward to seeing whether or not the house of Ravenclaw will need to create a new house just for the amount of Quidditch players they have. The team is looking forward to another year of fun and yet another year of success. We hope to continue our winning tradition and earn the Quidditch Cup once again.

Ravenclaw Blog
How on earth is an eaglet supposed to know what’s going on in Ravenclaw at any time? What special activities are coming up? Who won awards last month? How RQT is faring in the race for the Quidditch Cup? The answer to that is the Ravenclaw Blog. Similar to the HOL blog which can be found on the main HOL site, the Ravenclaw blog is a monthly newsletter of sorts meant to help Ravenclaw students know what’s going on.
The blog, written by a different Ravenclaw prefect every month, is posted in a special section of the Roost, the Ravenclaw common room. This is the place to get a quick update on all of Ravenclaw and HOL’s happenings!

The Slug Clubs (Open to All Houses)
Clubs and forums that require special permissions will be found here!
Clubs: We all know that Slytherins love to create mayhem. While this is permitted to some degree, it is also important to keep us occupied, or things can get out of hand. With that in mind, we have a number of Clubs that snakes can get involved with. There is the Arcade Club, for those who love playing games (don’t we all), the Book Club where you can discuss your favourite literature, and enjoy the Book of the Month. We also have a Music, Movies and Theatre Club and a Photography Club for you to share your favourite shots. Don't see a club that you would like? Let a Slytherin Staff member know. Maybe it can be added!
Quidditch: This is the place where the Slytherin Quidditch Team has all sorts of useful information to share with you about how to play Quidditch and join the team. The Slytherin Quidditch Team is lead by captain Rosemarie Halliwell and her co-captain Prof. Cody Lewis. The Sneerleaders, SQT's official fan club, hangs out in here as well.
SerpenTimes: The SerpenTimes is the official Slytherin newspaper! It releases periodic issues with loads of great articles, advice columns, poems, art and recipes! All students are invited to write for the SerpenTimes, no matter what house they are from. You can find the current issue here.
Green versus Silver: Green versus Silver is returning this year! Created 2009, this contest pits Slytherin against Slytherin. As students get sorted into this wonderful house, they are automatically assigned a team. Will it be Silver or will it be Green? Throughout the year, these two teams compete and earn scales to see which team reigns supreme.

Slytherin Staff
It is a lot of work to keep a large number of playful snakes under control, thankfully we have some very dedicated staff members who are well up to the task.
If you have any issues while in The Dungeons, your first port of call should be one of the Prefects. It is their job to keep everything running smoothly and provide assistance to any who need it. If you aspire to be a Prefect yourself, you will first have to serve your time as a Promising Student. Applications for Promising Students are open once a year, and those who are chosen are watched very carefully to see if they have what it takes. Prefects are appointed only as needed, and will only be chosen from the current batch of Promising Students.
Let me introduce you to the fabulous Slytherin staff:
Promising Students
Aurelia West
Prefects
Arianna Stonewater
Maxwell Shadow
Rosemarie Halliwell
Will Lestrange
Professors
Professor Amy Lupin
Professor Cody Lewis (HoH)
Professor Scarlet Leslie-Lewis (HoH)

House Pets
We have two house pets. Many years ago our previous Head of House (Prof. Prufrock) took a vacation and left his magical credit card behind for ‘emergencies’. The students of the house, along with the deputy, decided that there was no greater emergency than the need for a house pet! Several days later Basil the Basilisk joined the dungeons! Basil enjoys munching on newbies so be sure not to step on him, or to sit on his favourite couch by the fire, it might be the last thing you ever do! Basil is currently the Green Team mascot.
We have one other pet, who is lesser known, and he is called Mulambrabas, or Brabas for short. Brabas is a Lethifold and is usually found hiding in some dark corner deciding which student looks the tastiest, or hanging out in Prof Daphne‘s room. Brabas is the Silver Team mascot (and very cuddly).
During the Great Dungeons Flooding in 2015, The Giant Squid became a new pet of Slytherin. She is generally harmless and is found splashing around happily. Rumor has that she enjoys tickle fights.

Scales
They’re pretty, they’re shiny, and they’re very much in demand. Scales are Slytherin house activity points, and can be earned by taking part in competitions, earning HOL house points, and generally being active in The Dungeons. They do not however count towards HOL house points, but are very useful for bragging rights. Scales can get you awards and helps non-snakes looking to get the "Lion/Eagle/Badger in Snakes Clothing" award!
